PhraseExpander, a powerful yet easy to use text expander tool offered by Nagarsoft, will help you be more efficient by doing the typing for you and by performing certain actions when you press a hotkey or an assigned short text. I set it up, for example, so that when I type “fms”, the application expands it to “This is a FindMySoft test performed by George Norman.” I also set it up so that when I type “fmsite”, PhraseExpander launches Firefox and takes me to FindMySoft.com.

You can install PhraseExpander on top of a 32 or a 64-bit Windows edition. It is a standard installation process: download a 15MB executable, run it, follow the instructions presented by a PhraseExpander setup wizard. Among other things, the aforementioned setup wizard will ask you if you want to create desktop shortcuts, integrate with Explorer, and open a PhraseExpander tutorial. Once the installation completes, you have 20 days at your disposal to use PhraseExpander for free.

PhraseExpander features a ribbon interface. What you see on the ribbon depends on the button you pick: Glossaries, Commands, Help. What you see beneath the interface is divided into three panes: a pane that displays all your glossaries and groups of phrases; a pane that displays all your phrases; and a pane that presents details on a selected pane. To help you out, the application comes with some sample phrases that are nicely sorted into categories.

To get a taste of what PhraseExpander can do, you can play, view and use the aforementioned sample phrases. One such sample phrase is entitled “feel” – when you type “feel”, PhraseExpander will offer to expand it to “If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us.” Another sample phrase is called “twit” – type that word and PhraseExpander will offer to open the Twitter webpage for you.

You can easily create a glossary of your own, set up some groups inside that glossary, then add as many phrases as you want. You can set it up so that by typing a short piece of text or by hitting a hotkey, PhraseExpander will type something for you, open a file, launch a website, start an application, perform a Wikipedia search, and more.

As mentioned above, you have 20 days to evaluate PhraseExpander’s functionality for free. It must be mentioned that there are two PhraseExpander editions to choose from, a Standard and a Professional edition, and that the trial lets you activate the Pro edition’s features.

PhraseExpander is a wonderful tool and a must have for those who do a lot of typing. It expands text, performs actions like opening applications and launching websites, and it corrects spelling mistakes.

Pros

You can install PhraseExpander on a 32 or 64-bit Windows edition. The ribbon interface is fairly simple to figure out. You can get started with a sample database and get a better feel for what PhraseExpander has to offer. PhraseExpander is a handy text expanding utility. There are some useful macros to play with. There are two editions to choose from: Standard and Professional. You can change the system tray icon.

Cons

Free to use for 20 days.
